Shipping clothes from China to Greece is not difficult when the cargo, import arrangement and full delivery cost are clear before pickup. The same applies when shipping shoes from China to Greece. Problems usually begin when a buyer compares a low factory freight offer with another quotation that includes different services. One price may cover only the flight or ocean freight, while another may also include customs clearance, duty, VAT and delivery.

Fashion cargo has a few practical challenges of its own. Clothing cartons can be large but light, shoe boxes take up space, and one order may contain hundreds of colors, sizes and SKUs. In addition, the importer must prepare accurate product descriptions, values, labels and customs documents before the goods leave China.

This guide is for Greek importers, wholesalers, retailers and e-commerce sellers buying commercial clothing or footwear from Chinese suppliers. It explains which shipping method fits different order sizes, how freight and landed cost are calculated, when DDP may work, and what to check before the cargo reaches Piraeus or Athens.

Need a route and cost comparison? Send VoltFreight your product photos, carton dimensions, gross weight, total CBM, value, supplier city and delivery postal code. We can compare suitable express, air, LCL, FCL and reviewed DDP options.

Shipping Clothes from China to Greece: Which Method Is Best?

For samples and a few small cartons, express courier is usually the simplest option. Air freight can make sense for urgent commercial stock, while LCL sea freight is often better for planned wholesale orders that do not fill a container. FCL gives larger importers more control over high carton volumes and reduces the number of cargo-handling points.

DDP can also work for eligible clothing and footwear when the route, importer arrangement, customs declaration, tax scope and final delivery are confirmed in writing. It should not be treated as a universal “tax-free” channel.

A practical starting point is:

  • Small samples or replacement items: compare DHL, UPS, FedEx or another express service.
  • Urgent commercial cartons: compare air freight and air DDP using chargeable weight.
  • One to several cubic meters: compare LCL sea freight with air or sea DDP.
  • Large seasonal orders: compare 20GP, 40GP and 40HQ FCL options.
  • Several Chinese suppliers: consolidate the cargo in one China warehouse before export.

Clothing Shipping Cost and Time from China to Greece

The table below gives planning ranges, not a final VoltFreight quotation. Market rates change with the departure city, season, carrier space, fuel, carton density, product details and final delivery address. Port-to-port or airport-to-airport prices must not be compared directly with a DDP door-to-door price.

Shipping Method Usually Suitable For Planning Cost Range Typical Time After China Dispatch Important Cost Point
Express courier Samples and small urgent cartons Often about USD 8–12/kg About 3–7 business days Uses the higher of actual or dimensional weight; brokerage and tax terms vary
Standard air freight Urgent commercial stock, commonly 45 kg and above Often about USD 4–9/kg for the main air-freight scope About 5–10 days, with extra time for pickup, clearance and delivery Airport, customs and final-delivery charges may be separate
Air DDP Eligible commercial cartons needing coordinated clearance and delivery Cargo-specific quotation per chargeable kg Often about 10–18 days door to door Confirm where clearance occurs and whether duty and VAT are included
LCL sea freight Moderate wholesale orders that do not fill a container Public market references often start around USD 55–120/CBM for the ocean/LCL portion Often about 30–40 days to Piraeus, plus clearance and delivery Origin, deconsolidation, destination and delivery charges can exceed the basic ocean rate
FCL sea freight Large seasonal orders and high carton volumes Planning references of about USD 2,000–2,800 for 20GP and USD 3,100–4,500 for 40HQ port to port Often about 26–38 days to Piraeus, plus local handling Container rate does not automatically include pickup, port fees, customs, VAT or delivery
Sea DDP Suitable non-urgent cartons needing door delivery Route-specific quotation by kg, CBM or shipment Often about 35–50 days door to door Product, value, importer arrangement and postal code require review

Planning ranges reviewed in September 2026. They are broad market references rather than an offer and may change without notice. A valid quote requires the actual cargo and delivery details.

The cheapest-looking method is not always the lowest landed-cost option. LCL may show a low price per CBM but still create warehouse, documentation, deconsolidation, customs and local trucking charges. Ask for the complete scope before booking.

Which Method Fits Your Shipment Size?

Twenty kilograms of samples

For a few sample garments or shoes, express is usually easier than commercial air or LCL. The shipment still needs a realistic value and a clear invoice description; “free samples” does not tell customs what the products are.

Two hundred to five hundred kilograms of urgent stock

Compare express, standard air freight and air DDP. Standard air may suit an importer with an EORI number and Greek customs broker. DDP may be easier when the cargo qualifies and the quotation clearly includes customs and delivery.

One to fifteen cubic meters of wholesale clothing

LCL often becomes attractive when the order is not urgent. Request destination charges before choosing a port-to-port offer because deconsolidation, handling and delivery can matter more than the ocean rate.

A large seasonal or repeat order

FCL is worth comparing when the shipment uses a large part of a container, includes many cartons or needs fewer handling steps. Clothing importers should plan the loading sequence by SKU and protect cartons against moisture and compression.

Our China to Piraeus sea freight guide explains the port and container process in more detail.

Why Clothing and Shoes Can Cost More Than Their Actual Weight Suggests

Clothing and footwear are often low-density cargo. The carton may occupy a large amount of aircraft or truck space even when it is not heavy. Express and air-freight services therefore compare actual gross weight with volumetric weight and normally charge whichever is higher.

A common formula is:

Length × width × height in centimeters ÷ 6,000

Some courier routes use a divisor of 5,000, so confirm the formula used in your quote.

For example, a shoe carton measuring 60 × 50 × 50 cm has a volumetric weight of 25 kg when divided by 6,000. If the actual gross weight is only 12 kg, the carrier may still charge 25 kg.

Can clothing be vacuum packed?

Soft garments may be compressed when the product, retailer and packaging standard allow it. This can reduce air-freight chargeable weight and sea-freight CBM. However, compression may create wrinkles, damage structured garments or affect retail presentation. Test the packing method before applying it to the full order.

Should you remove shoe boxes?

Removing individual shoe boxes can save considerable volume, but it may also reduce protection and resale value. Tell the warehouse whether original boxes are required. A useful compromise may be to remove oversized courier cartons while keeping the retail shoe boxes and adding stronger master cartons.

Always request the finished carton count, gross weight and three outer dimensions before paying international freight.

How to Estimate the Landed Cost in Greece

The factory price and international freight are only part of the budget. A commercial import may also include:

  • China pickup or domestic delivery
  • Warehouse receiving, checking and consolidation
  • Export packing and documents
  • International freight and insurance
  • Customs duty based on the confirmed TARIC classification
  • Import VAT
  • Customs-broker and destination handling fees
  • Delivery to the final Greek address

Greece’s standard VAT rate is 24%, although reduced rates and location-specific rules may apply in defined cases. The Greek importer and broker should confirm the rate and VAT treatment for the actual transaction. See the Greek Ministry of Economy and Finance VAT guidance.

A simplified landed-cost example

Assume a clothing order has a goods value of EUR 10,000 and freight plus insurance to the EU border of EUR 1,000. If the confirmed tariff line carried a hypothetical 12% duty for this example:

  • Illustrative customs value: EUR 11,000
  • Illustrative duty: EUR 11,000 × 12% = EUR 1,320
  • Simplified VAT base before any other includable costs: EUR 12,320
  • Illustrative VAT at 24%: EUR 2,956.80

The total would be EUR 15,276.80 before brokerage, destination handling and local delivery. This is an illustration, not a tariff decision or quotation. Actual duty depends on the product classification, materials and construction.

Use the EU’s Access2Markets portal and your customs broker to verify the current TARIC code and rate.

2026 low-value parcel update: From July 1, 2026, the EU applies a temporary EUR 3 customs duty under the new rules for eligible low-value e-commerce consignments up to EUR 150. It applies by item category rather than as one simple fee per parcel. This rule mainly concerns low-value distance sales and should not be confused with the normal calculation for a bulk B2B clothing shipment. Review the European Commission guidance if you ship small direct-to-consumer orders.

DDP or Import Under Your Own Greek EORI?

Both arrangements can work, but they serve different buyers.

When a reviewed DDP route may help

DDP can be practical when you want the forwarder to coordinate transportation, customs and final delivery under one confirmed service. Before accepting the quote, ask:

  • Who acts as importer of record?
  • In which EU country will customs clearance occur?
  • Are customs duty and VAT included?
  • Will any brokerage or delivery fee be collected later?
  • Are clothing, footwear and branded goods accepted?
  • Does the route cover the final postal code, including islands?
  • What customs or tax documents will the customer receive?

A DDP price is not useful if the product, value or importer arrangement is unclear. VoltFreight reviews the cargo before confirming DDP shipping from China to Greece.

When importing under your own EORI may be better

A standard import arrangement gives an established Greek business more control when it has an EORI number, customs broker and VAT process. VoltFreight can manage China pickup and international freight, while the importer handles clearance and local charges.

This structure can be more transparent for repeat commercial imports and businesses that need customs documents for their accounting records. Read our China to Greece customs clearance, VAT and EORI guide for the detailed process.

From the Chinese Supplier to Greece: Step-by-Step

  1. Review the products. Confirm garment type, materials, intended use and brand status.
  2. Collect cargo data. Ask every supplier for cartons, dimensions, weight, ready date and pickup address.
  3. Arrange pickup or warehouse delivery. Suppliers can deliver to the nominated warehouse, or VoltFreight can quote pickup.
  4. Receive and check the cartons. Match the supplier, purchase order, SKU and carton marks, then complete the agreed checks.
  5. Consolidate and repack. Remove unnecessary outer packaging without sacrificing protection or presentation.
  6. Measure the finished shipment. Use final weight, dimensions and CBM to compare routes.
  7. Prepare consistent documents. The invoice, packing list, labels and physical goods should match.
  8. Confirm responsibility and book. Decide who clears the goods and pays taxes, then choose the route.

Supplier Consolidation, SKU Control and Quality Checks

A fashion order may involve separate factories for T-shirts, jackets and shoes. Shipping every supplier separately can create repeated minimum charges and make inventory control harder.

When several suppliers deliver to one China warehouse, use a receiving sheet that shows:

  • Supplier and purchase-order number
  • Product and SKU
  • Color and size
  • Ordered quantity
  • Expected carton count
  • Domestic tracking number
  • Required photos, labels or checks

Basic receiving is not a full product inspection

Basic warehouse receiving normally confirms carton arrival, visible outer condition, marks and quantity. It does not automatically check every garment, size, seam, zipper, shade, shoe pair or retail label.

For additional inspection, provide a written plan. The warehouse can open selected cartons, count samples, photograph labels, compare size ratios or confirm whether original shoe boxes are present.

Resolve wrong colors, missing sizes and damage while the supplier can still arrange a domestic return.

Keep the final cartons traceable

Every export carton should connect to the SKU and order record. A clear international packing list helps the customs broker, warehouse and buyer understand what each carton contains without opening the entire shipment.

Clothing Label Requirements for the Greek Market

Clothing and other textile products sold in the EU generally need a label or marking that identifies the fiber composition. The EU rules cover products containing at least 80% textile fibers by weight, and the information must use recognized fiber names rather than marketing terms such as “premium fabric” or “luxury blend.”

The information should be durable, visible and firmly attached where required. It must be available in the official language of the country where the product is offered, unless national rules allow otherwise. For Greece, plan Greek-language fiber information before production finishes.

A multi-component jacket may need separate information for its shell, lining, padding or other relevant components.

Do not treat every retail-label element as one EU textile rule. Size, care instructions, barcode, country of origin and retail tags may come from other legal requirements or the buyer’s commercial specifications. Confirm them separately.

Review the official EU textile label guidance before approving production labels.

Footwear Label Requirements

Most footwear sold to EU consumers needs material information for three parts:

  • The upper
  • The lining and sock
  • The outer sole

The label distinguishes leather, coated leather, textiles and other materials. A material is generally identified when it represents at least 80% of the upper or lining surface area, or 80% of the outer sole’s volume. Otherwise, show the two main materials.

The supplier should confirm the construction rather than guess from appearance. Textile sneakers, leather shoes and protective footwear can have different classifications and requirements.

The information can generally use the permitted pictograms or written descriptions and must appear on at least one item in each pair using an accepted attachment method. Check the official EU footwear label guidance.

Customs Documents, Branded Goods and Product Compliance

Use product-level customs descriptions

A shipment described only as “clothes,” “shoes,” “samples” or “fashion products” gives customs very little useful information. Use separate invoice lines for materially different products, for example:

  • Women’s knitted cotton T-shirts
  • Men’s woven polyester jackets
  • Textile-upper sports shoes with rubber outer soles
  • Leather-upper casual shoes with rubber outer soles

Each line should show quantity, unit price, total value, currency, country of origin and a confirmed HS or TARIC code where available. The invoice value should match genuine purchase and payment records.

Branded and replica goods

Keep invoices, authorization and authenticity records for legitimate branded goods. Descriptions such as “1:1,” “mirror quality” or “inspired” do not prove that a product is lawful. Counterfeit and unauthorized trademark goods should not be shipped.

Does ordinary clothing need CE marking?

Ordinary fashion clothing and ordinary footwear do not automatically require CE marking. However, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, protective gloves and other products marketed for protection may fall under the EU Personal Protective Equipment rules. Their intended protective function matters.

GPSR traceability

Under the EU General Product Safety Regulation framework, the importer should also confirm product identification, manufacturer details, EU economic-operator information and required warnings. Keep this information connected to the SKU records.

Piraeus customs does not inspect every clothing container, and no freight forwarder can guarantee that customs will never select a shipment. Accurate values, specific descriptions, consistent carton quantities and genuine brand records reduce avoidable questions.

Common Questions and Problems Greek Buyers Face

Why was the customs bill almost as high as the order value?

The bill may combine freight, duty, 24% VAT, courier brokerage, storage and delivery. Ask for a line-by-line explanation and check whether the shipping term was DDP, DAP or another arrangement.

Why did the courier charge more after delivery?

“Door delivery” does not necessarily mean duty, VAT and brokerage are prepaid. Confirm the Incoterm and tax scope in writing.

Why is the chargeable weight much higher than the scale weight?

Large clothing cartons and shoe boxes may be billed by volumetric weight. Request a photo, actual gross weight, all three dimensions, the dimensional divisor and the final billed weight.

One supplier is late. Must the whole shipment wait?

No. Compare the extra cost of a split shipment with the risk of missing the retail deadline. Urgent stock can leave first, while a slow supplier’s cartons remain for the next consolidation.

What if customs selects the shipment for inspection?

Follow the authority’s instructions and provide the requested records. Build time into seasonal orders because no forwarder can eliminate random or risk-based checks.

Does a standard door rate cover Crete or every Greek island?

Not always. Crete may require ferry or parcel-network handling, and other islands need case-by-case confirmation. Always provide the full postal code and address type.

What Information Is Needed for an Accurate Quote?

Send the following information together so the forwarder can compare equivalent routes:

  • Supplier city and pickup address in China
  • Product names, photos and intended use
  • Fiber composition or footwear material details
  • Brand status and authorization documents where applicable
  • SKU, size and color breakdown
  • Carton quantity, dimensions and gross weight
  • Total CBM and pallet details, if any
  • Goods value, currency and Incoterm
  • HS or TARIC code where confirmed
  • Whether retail packaging or shoe boxes must remain
  • Required warehouse checks, photos, labels or repacking
  • Greek importer and EORI status
  • DDP or standard import preference
  • Full delivery postal code and residential, business or warehouse address type
  • Cargo-ready date and required arrival date

A preliminary quote can use supplier estimates. The final booking should use the actual consolidated carton count, weight and dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest way to ship clothes from China to Greece?

Sea freight is usually the lowest-cost option for larger, non-urgent orders. Express can be more practical for very small samples, while air freight may offer a better balance for urgent commercial stock. Compare the complete landed scope because a low port-to-port rate may exclude substantial destination charges.

How long does clothing shipping from China to Greece take?

Express often takes about 3–7 business days after dispatch, standard air freight may take about 5–10 days plus local handling, and sea freight commonly requires about 30–40 days to Piraeus before clearance and delivery. Seller preparation, consolidation, customs and island delivery add time.

How much import duty applies to clothing in Greece?

There is no single rate for all garments. Classification depends on the product, knitted or woven construction, fiber composition, gender or age category and intended use. Confirm the TARIC code before calculating duty. Greece’s standard import VAT rate is 24%.

Can clothing and shoes use DDP shipping to Greece?

Suitable products may use DDP when the value, description, brand status, importer arrangement, tax scope and delivery postal code are accepted. Confirm the route for the actual cargo.

Do clothes sold in Greece need Greek labels?

Textile fiber information generally needs to be available in the official language or languages of the country where the product is offered to consumers, unless applicable national rules allow otherwise. Plan Greek-language fiber information and confirm the complete retail-label requirements with the importer.

What should I send to receive a quote?

Send product photos, materials, brand information, carton quantity, dimensions, weight, CBM, value, supplier city, ready date, import preference and final Greek postal code. Explain whether you need consolidation, inspection, labels or repacking.
