Air-Freight Chargeable Weight

Airlines and couriers normally compare actual gross weight with volumetric weight and charge the higher result. A common air-freight calculation is:

Length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6,000 = volumetric kilograms

The divisor can vary by airline, courier or service, so the quotation must confirm it. Furthermore, gross weight alone cannot produce a reliable air or express price; send the dimensions of every carton type as well.

LCL or FCL?

LCL can be suitable when the shipment does not fill a container. FCL can offer better control and a lower effective cost for larger volumes, but the decision should compare the complete origin-to-destination amount. Roughly 8–15 CBM is a useful point to request both LCL and 20GP quotations, not an automatic rule. Dense cargo, minimum charges, port fees, loading conditions and final trucking can move the break-even point.

What an Accurate Quote Should Show

Ask for a clear list of inclusions and exclusions. Depending on the selected route, VoltFreight may quote supplier pickup, export declaration, China terminal handling and international freight to Poti, Batumi or Tbilisi Airport. However, the Georgian consignee normally pays import duty, VAT, destination terminal charges, customs-broker fees, inspection, storage, airport or port collection and inland delivery. Check every item before booking, not after arrival.

Also confirm the quotation currency, payment terms, free-time allowance and cargo-insurance status. A carrier’s limited liability does not provide the same protection as all-risk cargo insurance. When you request insurance, provide the commercial invoice value, product description, packaging method and route before departure. 03. Sea Freight to Georgia via Poti and Batumi

Importers normally use sea freight from China to Georgia for FCL containers, LCL cargo, machinery, equipment, building materials, consumer goods and other less time-sensitive commercial shipments. Direct sailing availability depends on the carrier and date; many services involve transshipment before reaching the Black Sea. Batumi: An Alternative for Selected Cargo

Review Batumi when the final destination lies in western Georgia or when a carrier schedule, ferry connection, cargo type or local delivery plan makes it more practical. Although Poti remains the primary container option for many shipments, compare the full route before you exclude Batumi.

The better port depends on the actual sailing, transshipment plan, destination charges, customs arrangements, final city and inland trucking. For example, a longer schedule or more expensive inland journey can cancel the saving from a lower ocean rate.

From Poti or Batumi to Tbilisi

Tbilisi is the real commercial destination for many imports. After port release, cargo may move by truck to a warehouse, industrial area, business address or agreed handover point. Before booking, confirm whether the service includes customs clearance, container stripping, trucking, unloading, warehouse appointment and empty-container return.

Tbilisi Dry Port also strengthens the connection between the Black Sea ports and Georgia’s inland distribution market. MEDLOG announced a block-train service linking Poti and Batumi with Tbilisi Dry Port, with an indicated journey of approximately 13 hours, four weekly departures and capacity of up to 60 TEU per train. 04. Middle Corridor and Xi’an–Poti Multimodal Freight

Middle Corridor freight from China to Georgia uses a combination of rail, sea and sometimes truck transport. The official Trans-Caspian International Transport Route runs from China and Southeast Asia through Kazakhstan, across the Caspian Sea, through Azerbaijan and Georgia, and onward toward Europe. This is not one continuous train from a Chinese factory to a Georgian address. Instead, operators transfer cargo between rail terminals, ports, vessels and trucks. Every handover introduces schedule, documentation and capacity considerations. Therefore, the route requires more coordination than a simple air shipment, even when it offers a useful option for suitable commercial cargo.

A published Xi’an–Poti freight-train case provides a practical example of China-to-Georgia multimodal movement. China Daily reported that the route departed Xi’an, exited China through Khorgos, travelled through Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan and reached Poti. Use the 15-day figure only as a reference for that published Xi’an–Poti route case. It does not automatically include supplier pickup, consolidation waiting time, terminal cut-off, Georgian customs clearance or local collection. Before a customer relies on the schedule, check the current departure, equipment, cargo acceptance and planned route.

Air freight from China to Georgia suits urgent, high-value or time-sensitive cargo such as samples, replacement parts, electronics, fashion products, medical-related equipment and production components. Tbilisi International Airport, airport code TBS, serves as Georgia’s principal international air-cargo gateway. How Airport-to-Airport Freight to Tbilisi Works

Unless the written quotation says otherwise, the consignee pays Georgia import clearance, duty, VAT, destination-terminal charges, customs examination, airport storage, cargo release, collection and inland transport. Therefore, ask the local broker and trucker for these costs before you compare the total landed amount.

For an air quotation, send the cargo name, gross weight, dimensions of every package, supplier city, cargo-ready date, HS code, declared value and Tbilisi Airport as the requested destination. Because airlines charge the higher of actual and volumetric weight, dimensions can materially change the price.

Express Courier for Small Shipments

Express services such as DHL, FedEx, UPS or other available carriers can work for documents, samples, lightweight cartons and urgent replacement parts. The carrier option depends on origin, destination, product type, declared value and current acceptance rules.

Courier may not be the best route for large cartons, dense commercial cargo, liquids, powders, batteries, dangerous goods, branded goods or products requiring special permits. In those cases, controlled air freight, sea freight or multimodal freight may offer better documentation and handling.

Special Cargo Review

Batteries, electronic devices, magnets, chemicals, liquids, powders and dangerous goods may require an MSDS, UN38.3 test report, transport classification, special packaging or airline approval. Medical-related goods, wireless devices, cosmetics and branded products may need additional destination documentation. Consequently, confirm acceptance before the supplier delivers cargo to the warehouse.

06. Georgia Import Clearance, FTA, VAT and Duty

The Georgian importer or its appointed local broker handles import customs clearance for VoltFreight shipments to Georgia. In addition, the consignee pays duty, VAT, terminal charges and other destination costs before collecting the cargo. Arrange the broker and local transport provider before departure so that the shipment does not remain at the port or airport after arrival.

As a result, the commercial agreement and freight quotation must identify the Incoterm, named port or airport, transport boundary and each party’s costs. A low international freight rate does not include Georgia import clearance or inland delivery unless the quotation lists those items explicitly.

China–Georgia Free Trade Agreement

The China–Georgia Free Trade Agreement entered into force on 1 January 2018. According to China’s Ministry of Commerce FTA portal, Georgia immediately eliminated tariffs on 96.5% of tariff lines for Chinese products, covering approximately 99.6% of import value. However, the agreement does not give every shipment zero duty automatically. The goods must meet the origin rules, the importer must use the correct HS classification, and the importer must claim preference with the required evidence. A preferential Certificate of Origin may support that claim. Therefore, ask the Georgian broker to confirm the current origin rule and document format for the specific product before shipment.

VAT, Import Duty and Landed Cost

Georgia’s standard VAT rate is 18%, according to the PwC Georgia tax summary. Trade.gov describes Georgia’s general import-duty bands as 0%, 5% and 12%; see its Georgia import-tariff guide. The applicable treatment depends on classification, customs value, origin and the documents presented.

Even when preferential duty is zero, VAT, customs-service charges, terminal fees, inspection, storage or inland transport may still apply. Therefore, do not interpret “zero duty” as “zero import cost.” Ask the Georgian customs broker for a product-specific duty and tax estimate before departure.

07. Customs Documents and Restricted Cargo

No. The published example uses a rail-sea-rail multimodal route through several countries and across the Caspian Sea. The reported 15 days refers to a route section in that case, not the complete supplier-to-destination lead time. Therefore, add the current departure schedule, terminal handling, Georgia customs clearance and local collection to the plan.

How is air-freight chargeable weight calculated?

The airline or courier normally compares actual gross weight with volumetric weight and charges the higher figure. A common air formula is length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6,000, although the divisor can vary. Send exact dimensions for every package before requesting a price.
